Author life: things that have my attention this week

Taking a cue from the amazing K.M. Weiland, I’m going to post today about some things that have gripped my attention this week.

Book: Target Tokyo by James Scott

As an avid connoisseur of all things related to the 1942 Doolittle Raid, I was pleased to pick up a signed copy of Target Tokyo this April during its debut at the National Museum of the Air Force. This thick volume is everything a historical account ought to be—fast-paced, gripping, and full of personal anecdotes. It combines the best parts of every other book I’ve read on the raid into something quite stellar.

Movie: Monsters University

With all my writing, I haven’t had much movie-watching time this week. However, I did manage to snag a good bit of Pixar’s monstrous prequel. My favorite thing about the movie? The antagonist, Dean Hardscrabble. She’s a wonderful example of a well-crafted antagonist who isn’t a bad guy.

Music: Dual by Eamon Doorley / Julie Fowlis / Ross Martin / Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh

I still can’t get over how much talent and fun is in this album that mixes Scottish and Irish languages and musical styles. Julie Fowlis has long been a favorite of mine since I heard the two songs she wrote and performed for Pixar’s Brave.

Food: Starbucks’ Mango Black Tea

I usually stick with coffee at Starbucks, but I decided to branch out and try their new offering (the mango sounded pretty tempting). I certainly wasn’t disappointed! I have, however, been brewing some of my own using Irish breakfast tea (you can use any black tea, and even green or oolong works well) and the incredible Lorann Mango Flavor (it’s a tiny bottle, but you only need a few drops!). Or, you can mix and match to get a dozen different flavors.

So that’s me this week. What are you up to? Do you think I should make this sort of article a weekly thing? Sound off in the comments.

  1. I like this idea! Also, fun song 🙂 I’m going to share it with my family; my sisters love this type of music also. And happy belated birthday! Here’s an imaginary Starbucks drink to celebrate you!
